FAQs: Arizona Tax Credits

1) What is a Tax Credit?

A tax credit reduces your tax liability dollar-for-dollar. In other words, a tax credit comes right off the top of your state tax bill, lowering the amount you will pay.

Tax Credit Info Sheet

2) How do I file for a Tax Credit?

You or your accountant will complete a simple tax form or in the online software. The form is included with materials provided by the State of Arizona to all state tax filers.

3) How do I document my contribution?

We send you a contribution confirmation letter/email that documents your donation.

4) Do I have to give $495 to get the tax credit?

You may receive an Arizona state tax credit of up to $938 if you are married and filing jointly, or $495 if you are married and filing separately or a single taxpayer or head of household. But, any amount less than $987 (married) $495 (single) still qualifies! You can also split your tax credit between Qualifying Charitable Organizations of your choice.

5) Does this tax credit affect the Arizona private and public schools tax credits?

No. This is in addition to the school tax credit programs. You can receive a dollar-for-dollar tax credit for giving to all three tax credit programs! For example, you can give to a public school, a Private School Tuition Organization, and the Qualifying Charitable Organization credit too.

6) What is the deadline for this donation?

2024 calendar-year filers have until April 15, 2025, to make a qualifying contribution.  (It is a common misconception that you must make a contribution by December 31, 2024, to qualify for a 2025 tax credit.)  Please Note: Arizona law allows QCO donations made during 2024 or donations made from January 1, 2025 through April 15, 2025 to be claimed on the 2024 Arizona income tax return.  The maximum credit that can be claimed on the 2024 Arizona return for donations made to QCO's is $470 for single, married filing separate or head of household taxpayers, and $938 for married filing joint taxpayers.  If a taxpayer makes a QCO donation from January 1, 2025 through April 15, 2025 and wants to claim the higher 2025 maximum credit amount,  the taxpayer will need to claim the credit on the 2025 Arizona return filed in 2026.

The maximum QCO credit donation amount for 2025:
$495 single, married filing separate or head of household; $987 married filing joint.

Please Note: Arizona law allows QCO donations made during 2024 or donations made from January 1, 2025 through April 15, 2025 to be claimed on the 2024 Arizona income tax return.

Can you explain Arizona tax credits? How is a "tax credit" different from a "tax deduction"?

How the Arizona Tax Credit Works

When you file your Arizona taxes, you can claim a dollar-for-dollar Arizona Charitable Tax Credit that will either reduce your tax liability or increase your refund.  Download Flier

2 Ways 2 Give

  1. Qualifying Charitable Organization Tax Credit, single or married filing separately / head of household filers maximum gift $470; married filing jointly $938. Boys & Girls Clubs of the Valley, Arizona State QCO Code: 20331 on AZDOR Form 321
  2. Public School Tax Credit, single filers maximum gift $200 and married filers up to $400. Mesa Arts Academy, School Tax Credit TDS Code: 078613101 on AZDOR Form 322

FOR EXAMPLE:
If a couple owes a $1,100 in state income tax, and donates $938, they may subtract the $938 from their tax bill and pay the state only $162.

If they owe NOTHING in Arizona state income taxes, and donate $938, they will get a refund of at least $938 back from the state — what a great way to give to BGCAZ AND get money back, dollar-for- dollar!

GREAT NEWS!
The Tax Credit is available to you even if you do not itemize your deductions on your taxes. And you can take advantage of BOTH tax credits.

If you make your direct contribution to Boys & Girls Clubs of the Valley, or Mesa Arts Academy, it must be received prior to your tax filing.
