Power Hour program developed to address Arizona’s critical drop-out rate
(Phoenix, AZ March 15, 2013)— Ross Stores, Inc., is underwriting the expansion of the successful Power Hour program at three Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Phoenix branches in Phoenix and the West Valley. Power Hour helps young people develop academic, behavioral and social skills through homework completion, high-yield learning activities and tutoring.
According to Editorial Products in Education Research Center’s Diploma Counts (6/9/2011), 3 in 10 students will not graduate on time. In the underprivileged and at-risk communities that BGCMP serves, as many as 43% of students will not graduate.
Power Hour makes homework completion fun, and creates a climate of academic success at the Clubs. By integrating technology, games and incentives, and working closely with local schools, the extended learning experience improves young people’s academic performance and encourages them to graduate from high school. Boys & Girls Club members are 25% more likely to graduate.
“Ross is committed to supporting the families in the neighborhoods we serve,” said Jane Marvin, senior vice president, Human Resources of Ross Stores. “Through the Power Hour program, youth can develop the study skills and homework habits they need to excel academically and graduate from high school.” “A program like Power Hour lays the foundation for closing the academic achievement gap,” said BGCA President Roxanne Spillett. “Without the necessary study skills and discipline provided by Power Hour, it’s very difficult for a young person to achieve academic success and more importantly, ensure future workforce preparedness. We would like to thank Ross Stores for sponsoring this essential program and for their dedication to youth in communities nationwide.”
